11.30pm update, 30 Dec

Power has been restored to townships between Whyalla and Port Lincoln after the high-voltage transmission line which supplies the region ‘tripped’ due to smoke from a bushfire near Cowell on Monday.

To ensure community safety and protect the network from damage, the transmission network automatically ‘trips’ or shuts down when something abnormal is detected.

With the assistance of the CFS, at about 10.30pm ElectraNet was able to access the site where the trip occurred to inspect the line and check for damage. Following the inspection, power supply was restored at about 11.30pm.

ElectraNet is advising that smoke from a bushfire in the Cowell area has caused the high-voltage transmission line which supplies electricity to the Eyre Peninsula to ‘trip’ and cause a power outage.

To ensure community safety and protect the network from damage, the transmission network automatically shuts down when something abnormal is detected.

Townships between Whyalla and Port Lincoln are currently affected by the outage. Residents in Port Lincoln are being supplied power by the town’s backup generators.

ElectraNet is currently working closely with the CFS to identify when our crews can safely access the site where the trip has occurred and check the line so power can be restored as soon as possible.
