The high-voltage electricity transmission network in South Australia forms part of Australia’s National Electricity Market – and underpins our state’s economic development and the prosperity of the South Australian community.
Our state’s demand for electricity is growing. Renewable energy generation developments are increasing, driven by the federal government’s large-scale renewable energy target (LRET) policy. And there is also a growing need to replace ageing transmission assets, which were largely built between the 1950s and 1970s. Together, these factors are driving the need for ElectraNet to undertake ever-increasing levels of investment and development of the South Australian electricity transmission network.
We are actively planning to ensure that the state’s electricity transmission network is capable of meeting the future needs of South Australia and the National Electricity Market. We are also investigating the feasibility of further development of interconnector capability, which will support higher levels of renewable generation developments and also increasing peaking demands for power.
South Australia has an abundant supply of clean energy sources: providing new generators (gas-turbine, wind, geothermal, biomass, solar, and other emergent technologies) with opportunities to take advantage of the current available capacity within our state’s electricity transmission network.
As the largest connector of wind generation in Australia – we will continue to take an active role in working with governments and industry bodies to facilitate the network investment needed, to support the increased connection of renewable and other emergent energy resources into the future.
Our long-term vision for our state’s electricity transmission network is outlined through our Network Vision. And our Annual Planning Report provides information on the electricity transmission network’s likely capacity to meet demand in this state over the next twenty years, as well as our projected plans for network development.
