SA-Vic (Heywood) Interconnector Upgrade
Project Overview
This project targets an increase to the capacity of the existing 275 kV Heywood Interconnector to allow increased power flows between South Australia and Victoria, and thereby address congestion, high market price events and restrictions on wind farm output.
This project will resolve existing transmission network congestion. The selected option includes installing a third transformer and 500 kV bus tie at Heywood in Victoria, series compensation on 275 kV transmission lines in South Australia, a control scheme for South East transformers and 132 kV network reconfiguration works in South Australia. This will increase existing interconnector capacity from 460 MW to 650 MW, providing up to 190 MW of additional capacity.
Construction of the Black Range series compensation at Black Range is complete and it was energised in July 2016.
Following successful testing, the Australian Energy Market Operator is incrementally releasing the increased capacity to the market.
