Potential grid scale BESS locations in South Australia

ElectraNet has undertaken a high-level assessment to identify locations near ElectraNet controlled land as potential sites for grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to connect to ElectraNet’s high voltage electricity transmission network.

This assessment is an example of the work ElectraNet is doing to align with its corporate vision of Energising South Australia’s Clean Energy Future and in support of Australia’s transition to 100% net renewables.

ElectraNet’s approach to this qualitative, subjective assessment primarily considered two factors: land availability and suitability; and transmission network connectivity by considering the ability to construct and connect grid scale BESS to the electricity network. Furthermore:

  • Approvals for the development of a BESS at these sites is not a certainty, nor is the connection ability and in both cases, all standard processes would need to be followed, including community and stakeholder engagement, connection process, engineering, environmental studies, etc.;
  • The list is considered non-exhaustive, as proponents may have access to other sites which ElectraNet either does not have access to or has not considered in this assessment, which may also be good BESS locations.
