Operating the transmission system
ElectraNet's Transmission Operations business through its Control Centre, provides power system operations management services to ensure the efficient, reliable and safe operation of the South Australian power system.
Planning, directing, monitoring and controlling transmission and related high voltage distribution network operations are integral components of this service.
In addition, the Control Centre provides remote operation of gas turbine generating stations, network switching, management of power system emergencies and data management services for ElectraNet and various other customers within the State and the NEM. This team constantly strives to exceed its customer's needs and effectively manage power system emergencies.
To realise this outcome, the Control Centre is equipped with leading edge technology operations control equipment and state-of-the-art information management and communication systems. This is all backed up by our highly trained and competent Control Centre Officers who have achieved world best practice in their field.
With the introduction of the competitive National Electricity Market (NEM), new business systems and commercial risk management arrangements have been established. Compliance with the National Electricity Law and Code and the requirements of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), are key responsibilities for ElectraNet. These requirements are embedded in business policies, practices and operating procedures.
Rotational load shedding
"Rotational Load Shedding" occurs when our State Control Centre is directed by AEMO to facilitate power outages throughout metropolitan suburbs, to ensure the security of South Australia's power system and support the operation of the National Electricity Market.
AEMO are the Australian Energy Market managers. This organisation issues regular market notices and national electricity demand figures on their internet site.
During load shedding, customers are disconnected on a rotational basis to balance the demand for electricity with available generation supply (which includes supply available from the Victorian interconnector).
Supply interruptions are however a last resort, and when implemented, are planned to last no longer than 60 minutes - every effort is made by ElectraNet to minimise any inconvenience to the community.
