ElectraNet is the owner, operator and manager of South Australia’s high-voltage electricity transmission network, with a goal of transporting electricity from electricity generators to end-users in an efficient and reliable manner at all times. ElectraNet operates in an environment with ever-increasing demand for electricity. This is fuelled by Adelaide’s continual expansion, particularly in the outer-metropolitan and industrial regions, such as the South East and Mid North of the state, as well as in the Far North of the state where the resources boom is beginning to occur.
South Australia is also known for having one of the ‘peakiest’ demands in the world; that is, peak demand happens for short but sustained periods throughout the year, particularly in summer, creating extremely high demand on the network in short bursts. Therefore, our network must be able to provide a reliable supply during these extreme demand periods. We ensure the needs of our direct-connect customers, the South Australian community and participants in the National Electricity Market are met by:
- operating the transmission network in a safe and efficient manner – we manage our network operations and plan all our work to ensure safety and to minimise costs.
- preserving existing network service capacity – we manage our network assets to ensure they continue to deliver a secure and reliable supply.
- developing increased network service capacity as required – we anticipate growth in electricity demand and seek the most cost-effective option to deliver a secure and reliable supply to meet it.
These activities are based on clear objectives and principles drawn from our understanding of the needs of the South Australian community and electricity market, and are based on three long-term objectives for that market: safe, secure and value for money.

Network Customer Manager, Chris Rae
Chris manages our network customers, from progressing new unregulated connection opportunities through to managing those customers once they’re connected. ElectraNet has more than twenty such customers, from power generators, wind farms and mining operations to direct load customers within both established and emerging markets.
