Trees For Towns is the 30th birthday initiative of Trees For Life, which has 'gifted' one thousand local native trees or shrubs to each of the 30 successful participating communities across South Australia.
This gift includes the provision of support and guidance to establish working groups and progagation workshops which will select, propagate, plant and care for the local provenance species chosen.
As the Principal Sponsor of Trees For Towns, ElectraNet is delighted to partner with Trees For Life to bring this wonderful opportunity to all South Australian communities – to grow and maintain native seedlings indigenous to their region – in their respective towns.
ElectraNet's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ian Stirling said:
'As the developer of South Australia's high-voltage transmission network, it is our commitment to reduce community and environmental impacts wherever possible.'
'Apart from our own revegetation works around transmission assets, we are proud to support Trees For Towns, which is a state-wide community initiative to revegetate cleared land with native species and actively protect our state's precious biodiversity values.'
'The South Australian community response to Trees For Towns has been outstanding and ElectraNet representatives are looking forward to assisting Trees For Life with arrangements for community propagation and planting over the next 14 months.'
The thirty successful towns were announced in July 2011 including Robe, Port Broughton, Parndana (Kangaroo Island), Roxby Downs, Crystal Brook, Nairne, Milang, Port Pirie, Normanville, Naracoorte, Murray Bridge, Peterborough, Carramulka, Lochaber, Berri and Andamooka.
Full details of this Trees For Towns initiative are available from the Trees For Life website, or by contacting the Trees For Life office on (08) 8406 0500.
Trees For Life conducted regional propagation workshops in the successful towns during November 2011, where communities learnt about the value of revegetation and biodiversity while simultaneously enhancing the local environment and contributing to the spirit of community in their respective township. The Trees For Towns initiative will culminate mid 2012 with planting events and community celebrations.
Trees For Life's 30th birthday marks 30,000,000 native trees and shrubs grown by the community since 1981.
ElectraNet proudly supports Trees For Life.
Trees For Life provides education and opportunities for the community and organisations to do something practical to improve their local natural environment.
At ElectraNet, we are committed to minimising the impacts of transmission assets through detailed engineering designs, revegetation and landscaping solutions, as well as long-term partnerships with organisations such as Trees For Life.
Since July 2008, ElectraNet has engaged Trees For Life to undertake bush rehabilitation activities at our Cherry Gardens substation site.
Under the Bush For Life program, Trees For Life utilise paid staff and volunteers to rehabilitate the important and valuable native bushland surrounding our Cherry Gardens substation by removing and controlling exotic (introduced) vegetation/weeds.
ElectraNet’s Cherry Gardens substation site contains important habitat for several nationally endangered species such as the Southern Brown Bandicoot (Isoodon obesulus), Scarlet Robin (Petroica boodang) and Spider Orchids (Caladenia sp.).
Some of the invasive weed species being targeted around this substation site include declared and environmental pest plants such as Olive, Bridal Creeper, Erica (Spanish Heath), Watsonia, Broom, Boneseed, Freesia, Blackberry, Cotton-bush, Pine trees and several non-local/invasive Acacia and Melaleuca species.
ElectraNet has also utilised the services of Trees For Life to rehabilitate approximately 40 hectares of degraded, previously grazed agricultural land surrounding our Tungkillo substation in the Adelaide Hills, with locally-sourced native flora species.
